Those eyes buried in a dark face seem to speak volumes, and, entrancing , they pull you in. Seal has managed to craft an image for himself over his 15 plus years in the music industry that looks past the scars left on his face during a tragic childhood episode with lupus. The scars and pock marks left haven’t cause him to shy away from the stage, instead attacking it like a lion. Seal has become a well-known artist, though it seems like every album is a “comeback” simply because he tends to release his work with several years time intervening between each album. While this has kept him from catching on with the general public, his fans have remained loyal, and have yet to lose track of his amazing output.
He’s released five full-length albums so far, and each has been highly successful. His rise came in the early ‘90s, when he was attached to the booming house scene in England. There he linked up with veteran producer Adamski, who had Seal provide vocals for a track of his called “Killer.” It became an instant radio hit.
With his voice all over the airwaves, Seal nabbed himself a contract for his self-titled debut album. He worked with Trevor Horn, who had produced such artists as the Buggles and Frankie Goes to Hollywood in the past. The single from that album that really made Seal was “Crazy,” a ubiquitous hit in the early ‘90s that continues to be a favorite today.
As Seal evolved his sound, he broke away from house, keeping elements of it but blending together rock, soul, and other genres of music into a uniquely stamped kind of style. Though is major heyday was that period in the mid-90s, every few years he releases another album, it becomes a big hit, and new fans find their way to his past work. He’ll start touring, as he’s doing now, and Seal tickets will sell out. Then he’ll vanish again.
Many people have never made a concerted effort to find out who this musical man of mystery is, but they’re denying themselves some very good songs.
