Website Design Hypocrisy
If you have been involved in internet marketing for more than a couple of years at the time of this writing, then you are probably like me and have noticed a bunch of internet marketing gurus throwing out website design advice such as:
“You have to have video on your website” or “you have to have audio on your website” or “your website has to include Web 2.0″ or “your website has to have audio, video, Web 2.0, and every other kind of web content under the sun”.
That kind of advice, in and of itself, is no big deal, until you think back not too long ago, when the advice on website design from all of these internet marketing gurus (most of which don’t know how to design a website themselves) was that your website had to be simple, with hardly anything at all on it except text, and definitely no audio or video or any kind of multimedia for that matter.
Were all of the internet marketing gurus really so wrong back then. Not really. No matter how unethical or dishonest they may be, most of them are still very intelligent people, so they weren’t telling everybody to have simple websites just because they didn’t know any better.
So does that mean that a lot of these gurus are lying now? Some of them probably are, but that’s not the whole reason either. You have to remember that with a lot of these internet marketing gurus, ‘right or wrong’ or ‘truth or dishonesty’ doesn’t matter. All that matters is what it takes to make a sale, so they are as ready to tell someone a lie as they are to tell that same person the truth, and vice, versa.
Well, then, does it mean web surfers now refuse to visit any website that isn’t loaded with as much multimedia as possible? Well of course it doesn’t. So what is it then?
When you think about it, it sort of explains why the gurus are taking a whole different stance on web design. Back in the day when there wasn’t much to add to a website other than text, clip art, and maybe some still images, then naturally all of the web design software that these gurus were promoting were not capable of making movie like websites, so what advice do you think all of the gurus were spouting then? That’s right, that only a simple website would do you any good in internet marketing.
Now that we have a lot of applications that can help build websites with all kinds of multimedia and user interaction, the gurus are now telling you the exact opposite. That you have to have all of this on your website and that a simple website won’t do you any good.
A great many of these internet marketing gurus either totally forget how they were marketing last month, or they just assume that everybody else on the internet has the word ’schmuck’ written on their forehead. There are probably a lot of them in both of these camps.
In conclusion, there is a lot of Hypocrisy in general that goes on in internet marketing, but the good news is that it usually doesn’t take much to spot most of these hypocrisies and double standards in the internet marketing niche. Most of the time all that it takes is keeping one’s eyes and ears open.
