Smart Lipo Science
Smart Lipo at Nottingham Laser Clinic is very popular among patients, and there are many reasons why Smart Lipo is preferred to traditional liposuction. Amongst these are the reduced discomfort due to less invasive equipment; the speed of the treatment and minimal downtime caused; the lower risk due to use of local rather than general anaesthetic; vastly reduced bleeding and swelling due to sealing of blood vessels while the surgery is in progress; tightening of any loose skin due to the stimulation of collagen production. But what exactly is the science behind the results?
Smart Lipo uses a very fine canula, measuring less than 1mm in diameter, to deliver laser light into the layer of fat just beneath the skin. The surgeon gently moves the laser in slow fanning movements. Because of the size and flexibility of the canula, fat can be removed from almost any part of the body, and the incision made in the skin is so small that there is no need for stitching. The Nd:YAG laser powering the machine ruptures the walls of the fat cells, liquefying the fat within them. The heat from the laser seals the blood vessels, meaning that bleeding and bruising is minimised.
Over the next few months the resultant liquid fat is metabolized and drains harmlessly away via the lymphatic system. The laser heat also stimulates the skin’s fibroblasts to produce collagen, leaving skin firm and tight. Research has shown that little (if any) fat is reabsorbed, and with Smart Lipo scarring is minimal.
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, rather than the general anaesthetic required for traditional liposuction. This means that there is far less risk with Smart Lipo, and also keeps downtime to a minimum. Patients can usually return to work within 24 hours. Pressure garments are worn for a week or less, as opposed to the 6-12 weeks for liposuction.
