•No loose threads that little fingers or toes could get caught in.

So, what can you possibly do to get a good night’s sleep some time within those four months, if your baby has colic? Good question!

One way to help you and your baby get some much needed relief is by using the rocking and motion technique to alleviate the colic. This has been proven to be a very effective way to help with colic. It’s best to hold the baby on his or her side when rocking him or her as this technique can really help in keeping your baby calm. However, be certain to always support your baby’s head and neck when rocking him or her.

Listed below are some different techniques for using the rocking and motion technique:

1. Method #1 – This consists of the traditional rocking motion that most people use to put their babies to sleep. It’s just a gentle swaying back and forth. It does work for some, but not for all.
2. Method #2 – This is the same as the first method, but with much faster and smaller motions. You should aim to go back and forth about twice a second, or even a little faster.
3. Method #3 – This method is more like vibrating than rocking, and involves holding the baby and shaking it as if were shivering. This can get tiresome, so many parents may choose to hold the baby on their lap and vibrate one of their legs up and down. It’s mainly the upper body of the baby that you want to vibrate, but be certain you support his or her head and neck while doing this.
4. Method #4 – This method is a little more complicated. Begin by holding your left hand out, palm up, elbow bent, and then place your baby on your hand so your hand is under his or her chest and your left forearm or wrist is under his or her crotch. Finally, bring your baby close to your chest and use your other arm to support his or her head and neck while wrapping your right hand around to hold his or her side and bottom. This should allow your baby to be draped over your left hand with his or her arms and legs dangling toward the floor. You can then support the head and neck with your right arm.

As this interminable 2008 election whimpers on into the fall, our family has at least used it to teach a few civics lessons to our two young children.

The success of the first viable female and African-American candidates, of course, has been much bally-hooed for their significance. As adults, we appreciate what paradigm shifting events mean within the context of history.

Four years ago, when my daughter was only four, I asked her if she wanted to be President one day. She immediately responded, “That’s silly, daddy. Girls can’t be President.” It’s not that she isn’t exposed to strong women, but, on a media-savvy world, she had yet to see a woman running for President on TV or YouTube. For a parent, hearing your kids already slamming doors to possibilities at such an early age is an extremely painful thing. I immediately told her that everything was possible, though felt my arguments were weakened by the lack of empirical evidence that would convince a small child. We’ve talked a lot more since then about strong women leaders. We never miss the chance to point out a woman in a position of power.

As a consequence, I’ve been dealing with my daughter’s undying support of Hillary. If she were a bit older, she would be writing vicious letters to the editor complaining about the loss of her “girl-power” candidate. Like some other Democrat hold-outs, she still hasn’t decided whether she can let go of her passionate support for the “girl candidate” and shift her allegiance to Mr. Obama.

In our house, we’re addicted to political news and our kids know who we consider “idiots” and “bozos.” I’m very proud they can recognize several world leaders even in editorial page caricatures. They tend to remember the ones we mock and decry them most, however. A good resolution for us will be to teach them to recognize also the heroes in world affairs.

We all vote together as a family and this Election Day will be no different. In California, as in most states, you can take your kids right into the polling booth with you and they can see up close what citizenship is really like. I remember, as a child, thinking that voting would be one of the coolest things about being an adult. This wasn’t out of some precocious understanding of the workings of democracy. I had some notion that the big booth with the huge lever and sliding curtain was some kind of Rube Goldberg-style pinball machine and that there must be some mighty fine entertainment within the confines of that little room.

Voting in San Francisco is a bit more pedestrian: no booth and giant lever, but just an ordinary felt pen and long text paragraphs of indecipherable resolutions. Still, I bring the kids in with me and I’ll hoist the four year old on my shoulders so he can watch what I’m doing. He won’t understand too much of it, but that’s okay. Like a lot of parenting, the lesson will be in the doing. Good habits start young, and I’d like to believe that my kids, like me, will have a hard time skipping out on the joys of citizenship, like the simple act of voting.

Each year emergency rooms treat the victims of many preventable accidents. It could be a fall down a stairs, an accident in the kitchen or bathroom, or something to do with roller blinds and windows. Each year there are thousands of children with window related injuries that are admitted to emergency rooms. Fortunately these accidents are preventable with just a couple of easy safety measures.

The following are three of the most important safety devices you should use if you are concerned about your child’s safety around windows.

Window Stops
A window stop might be a suitable safety device if you have windows that normally stay closed, as the window stop will prevent a window from opening more than ten centimetres. The only downside to using a window stop is that you will not be able to open the window fully, so if you are looking or a safety device that will allow you to have more ventilation you will want to go with the window guard option.

Safety Devices for Roller Blinds
Most roller blinds manufactured before 2001 may not meet the current child safety regulations because older roller blinds tend to have long cords that sometimes form a loop. A long cord, especially a looped one, is a danger to a child’s safety as children can easily get tangled up in the cord and strangle themselves. Some of the older roller blinds have cords without stoppers, which make them accessible to children. These horrible accidents usually occur to infants and toddlers. Infants who were placed near a window may end up strangling to death in their own cribs. Toddlers tend to die this way after climbing up to see out of a window, falling, and getting caught in the cords of the roller blinds. Fortunately strangulation by blind cord deaths are preventable. Since roller blinds purchased before 2001 pose the greatest strangulation risk, there are a couple of things you can do. You can purchase an upgrade kit that will include safety tassels and stoppers for your older roller blinds, or the best action you can take is to install new roller blinds that are made with child safety devices.

Window Guards
Since window screens are not effective for preventing children from falling out of window, windows guards are one of the best solutions on the market today. Window guards can help prevent serious falls from windows as they act like a gate. Installed in front of the window, window guards are available in both horizontal and vertical bars. When looking for a window guard you will want to find one that has a release mechanism so that it can be fully opened in case of an emergency, like a fire. In order to prevent a child from squeezing through, the bars of the window guard should be a maximum of ten centimetres apart.

Ultimately window safety is the choice of the parent. If you are at all concerned with the safety of your child you may want to look into childproofing your windows and roller blinds.

Crying predictably
Also known as the “rule of threes.” If a baby cries for three or more hours a day, three or more days a week, for three consecutive weeks, but is otherwise healthy and thriving, she can be diagnosed with colic. The crying jags usually start early evening and may last until well after bedtime. Your baby may be extremely gassy and pass some gas towards the end of the colic episode.

Out of control crying
Baby’s cry will be intense and inconsolable. A colicky baby seems to be in pain, and the crying is indicative of this. The face will more than likely be extremely red. And any attempt to comfort will seem almost impossible. Because of the extreme crying, your baby will swallow too much air which results in gas.

Posture change
You will notice your baby tends to curl up her legs, clench her fist and have tense, rigid stomach muscles.

What are the Causes of Colic?
Despite thorough research, no single cause for colic has been narrowed down. The fussiness a colicky baby demonstrates has many different causes. In order to help your baby, you need to become familiar with several different colic remedies to help soothe your baby’s pain.

Some possible theories of the cause of colic are:
• Problems digesting proteins like lactose and others.
• Acid Reflux (stomach acid flows backwards into the esophagus)
• Intestinal cramps from an immature digestive system
• Too much air being swallowed which leads to gas being caught in the digestive tract
• Too much mental stimulation on an immature nervous system

Barry M. Lester, Ph.D., director of the colic clinic at Brown University, states that of the approximately four million babies born, 800,000 suffer from colic. His book Why is My Baby Crying is a valuable resource for parents of babies with colic.

In his book, Lester indicates you can differentiate between a “normal” baby cry and a “pain” cry.

“The pain cry is usually high-pitched, loud, and of sudden onset and includes long periods of breath-holding,” Lester writes.

Parents of colicky babies can assure you, the cry you witness is a “pain” cry. If you think your baby’s cry sounds like she is in pain, please call your doctor right away. There may be other conditions present other than colic.

Parents who watch their baby suffer from signs of colic suffer as well. They might feel utterly helpless. However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Colic will more than likely disappear by the third month of life (although some cases have been known to last up to 9 months).

If you doctor confirms that your baby is suffering from colic, don’t despair. Although colic will probably disrupt your schedule and make you feel like an incompetent parent, you’re not. Colic is not your fault, and there are lots of tools and remedies available to help soothe your baby and make her happy and comfortable again.
