Familiar yet different in southern Cyprus
Beaches, history and beautiful landscape: these are all themes that come to mind at the mention of Cyprus, which has been a member of the European Union since 2004 and a leading tourist destination for far longer.
Some 2.4 million people visit the southern Cyprus each year, bringing in more than 1.7 billion euros of revenue each year, according to the Cyprus Tourist Promotion Agency. This fact alone may be enough to prove its viability as a property investment destination, but Paul Collins, property editor of Buy Association, suggests that there may be other factors at play as well.
Cyprus is a former British colony that gained independence in 1960 to become a Commonwealth republic the following year. Mr Collins says that those who are retiring or investing in the country may find certain aspects that are reminiscent of the UK familiar and appealing.
“The legal system in southern Cyprus property is based on English law, people drive on the left and pretty much everybody speaks English,” he explains, adding that many expats “don’t want to be somewhere that’s completely different”. This aspect of familiarity may also be attractive to property investors who do not want to navigate a completely different legal system.
Regarding where to buy property in southern Cyprus, Mr Collins suggests that the harbour town of Paphos is “still very,
very popular” for visitors and investors. This area boasts both modern resorts and ancient ruins, offering something for everyone. Paphos has an important role in Greek history, having been the site where Aphrodite landed when she rose from the sea. These days, her legacy continues - and many still venture there for romantic breaks and a dip in the sea.
“They’re extending the airport there, so it’s going to be even more popular,” Mr Collins adds. “The area around Aphrodite Hills and the golf development up there is, again, very popular.” Paphos also has a number of low-cost carriers that offer flights from the UK, according to the Cyprus Tourist Promotion Agency.
Other areas that are popular for tourists to visit in Cyprus include Avia Napa, which is known as the party capital of the island, and the resort towns of Coral Bay and Protaras southern Cyprus property - both of which may appeal to families.
According to the Indigo Guide, southern Cyprus’ main tourist season lasts from mid-May to mid-October, with temperatures during this period hovering around 32 degrees C near the sea.
