Coffee Machines - Choice is everything

Coffee is a global commodity with Britons drinking approximately 70 million cups of coffee per day. With this amount of usage, no wonder there are so many coffee machine choices out there! Coffee machines have evolved over the years with new technologies, new features, flavours and designs meeting consumer needs. The Vending Business is thriving and this has continued into the home. The latest coffee machines are designed to allow for different flavours and textures that the consumer?s love such as mochas and lattes.

When it comes to choosing which coffee machine to buy, with so many features, brands, designs to choose from, the choice for the consumer if a difficult one. The first step in choosing the right coffee machine is deciding what type to buy. This ultimately depends on what kind of drinks you want and is it for the home or for the office? In terms of drink choice, your basic decision here is if you want traditional coffee or speciality drinks.

Design
Do you want a drink machine that looks cool in your home or office, perhaps you would like it to match the kitchen design? Many drink machines come in different colours and some even with interchangeable fascias so you can change its look easily. Find the design you want online by typing into Google images ?drink machine? and view all the different designs available.

Price
Price is always going to be a critical factor for anyone choosing a coffee machine. What machine can you afford in your price budget? Is it worth spending that little bit extra to get a better tasting drink? Is it for the office and therefore, will it meet demand and be price effective? You can spend anything from ?30 to ?300 on a drinks machine. The internet often has the cheapest prices so shop around to find the best price for the model you want.

Drink Choice
At home, families typically have differing tastes from the kids who love their hot chocolate to grandma who loves her tea. Therefore, a drinks machine that caters for all their needs will be the perfect choice. Alternatively, a couple both love coffee would be better off with a machine that specializes in gourmet coffee.

Choice of drinks will be even more important if you are buying an office drinks machine. Perhaps you want a drink machine that can make cappuccinos, latte’s, mochaccino’s, coffees, teas and hot chocolate. A drinks machine such as the Flavia Fusion Station can do exactly this using revolutionary technology that brews direct from pack to cup guaranteeing that every drink is completely pure and untainted by previous brews. The availability of restocking drinks should be easily accessible, either online or in local supermarkets.

Hassle Free
A coffee machine that is hassle free is as important as ever in our busy hectic lifestyles. Many people prefer a coffee machine that does not require daily cleaning so opting for a self-cleaning machine is a popular choice. Many models also offer pause and pour features that allow you to interrupt the brewing process, if you can?t wait for that first cup in the morning. Timers allow you to program the machine to start brewing before you wake up in the morning. These machines are easy and convenient to use. They are great if you drink a lot of coffee or will be serving a crowd. You can brew a pot at a time, rather than just a cup or two.

History of the coffee machine
Many people love hot drinks, especially coffee. We are all aware that coffee provides a boost of energy and warm us up on those cold winter days. However, what is the history of coffee machines as without these machines, coffee drinking would not be as popular.

The early Egyptians were the first known people to use coffee though the Coffee bean originated in Africa and quickly spread to neighbouring countries such as Arabia and Egypt. The first method of preparation was to roast the beans on an open fire and then added to boiling water for consumption.

History tells us that coffee was considered as a type of wine, which was used to barter and trade with. Fermented in a similar way to grapes, coffee was a source of energy and warmth for most but some drank it because they loved the taste too.

A gentleman called Mr. Laurens invented the first coffee-making machine in 1818 which has been constantly modified thereafter to bring us to the coffee machines we see today. Endorsed by both men and women, the coffee machine over the years has become a reliable, dependable and easy to use product.

Coffee makers date all the way back to the Turks in 575 A.D but it was not until 1818 when the first coffee percolator was created. This coffee pot became known as the “cowboy pot” because so many cowboys had begun using it. between the years of 1835 to 1850, coffee makers began to completely saturate the marketplace. Everything from glass balloons, to pressure steamers, to grinders and roasters had all started to become available.

In the year of 1890, the Manning-Bowman Percolator started to get distributed in the United States. These percolators were made out of linen with a cloth that had to be cleaned after every use.

It wasn’t until 1912 that a paper filter was finally introduced which helped coffee makers explode in popularity since the clean up was so much easier and in 1960, disposable filters began being used commercially.

It was 1972 when coffee makers really hit the big time with thanks to Mr Coffee and his automatic drip process with disposable filter. Today, Mr. Coffee is still the largest coffee maker in the world, mainly because the business is always adapting to the needs of the consumers.

Companies such as MyFlavia and Braun have a strong reputation of innovative drink machine designs and models. Some of the features that these companies are incorporating into coffee machines nowadays include built in water filtration systems with energy efficiency innovations.

Coffee continues to grow in popularity and demand. No matter where you are in the world, you are sure to see someone enjoying a cup of fresh coffee. Coffee machines are now found in many homes and offices with hundreds of manufacturers producing new models each year including Braun, MyFlavia, Senseo, Kitchenaid, Krups and Pod. They all have their own features, flavours and all bidding to compete with Mr. Coffee. One thing is for sure, with more competitions comes lower prices and more choice for us the consumer so happy times for the coffee lover.

Vegetarian Diet and its Advantages on Health

Vegetarian Diet and its Advantages on Health

We tend to scoff at vegetarians, call them nuts among the berries, but the fact is they’re doing better than we are,’ says Dr William Castelli, Director of the US government’s Framingham Heart Study in Massachusetts.

Even lacto-ovo-vegetarians,people who eat milk and eggs, live longer (by about three years) than low-meat eaters. For instance, the coronary heart disease mortality among total vegetarians is only 14 per cent. Vegetarians can, of course, have heart attacks, but they occur approximately 20 years later than in the lives of meat eaters. This is a huge difference. And vegetarians live their lives feeling more fit and healthy and suffering from fewer bouts of sickness.

Even doctors, who have been slow to recognize the importance of nutrition to health, are beginning to concede to the scientific evidence that has been accumulating for about a hundred years. The ultra-conservative British Medical Association has released a report stating categorically that vegetarians live longer than meat eaters. Vegetarians, the report concludes, have a 28 per cent lower risk of dying from heart disease and a 39 per cent lower risk of dying of cancer.

Scientists only make idiots of themselves when they refuse to face the implications of their work. What they should be asking now is what it is about meat that kills: the human machine is not designed to deal with it, so it becomes a poison. According to Arthur Upton, director of the National Cancer Institute in the USA: ‘Upto 50 per cent of all forms of cancer are caused by diet. Colon cancer should be the most apparent indicator because that is where problems with digestion show up. There is not a single population group in the world with a high meat intake which does not have a high rate of colon cancer.’ Here are some statistics:

• World populations with high meat intakes which do not have correspondingly high rates of colon cancer: None.
• World populations with low meat intakes which do not have correspondingly low rates of colon cancer: None.
• Increased risk of breast cancer for women who eat meat daily compared to women who eat meat less than once a week: four times higher.
• Increased risk of breast cancer for women who eat eggs daily compared to women who eat eggs less than once a week: three times higher.
• Increased risk of breast cancer for women who eat butter and cheese three or more times a week compared to women who eat these foods less than once a week: three times higher.
• Risk of death from heart attack of average animal food eater: 50 per cent.
• Risk of death from heart attack of average vegetarian: 15 per cent.
• Risk of death from heart attack of average purely vegetarian: four per cent.
• Amount you reduce your risk of heart attack by reducing your consumption of meat, dairy products and eggs by 10 per cent: nine per cent.
• Amount you reduce your risk of heart attack by reducing your consumption of meat, dairy products and eggs by 50 per cent: 45 per cent.
• Amount you reduce your risk of heart attack by reducing your consumption of meat, dairy products and eggs by 100 per cent: 90 per cent.
• Rise in blood cholesterol from consuming one egg per day: 12 per cent.
• Rise of heart attack risk from 12 per cent rise in blood cholesterol: 24 per cent.
• Meat, dairy and egg industries claim there is no reason to be concerned about your blood cholesterol as long as it is ‘normal‘. Your risk of dying of a disease caused by clogged arteries if your blood cholesterol is ‘normal’: over 50 per cent. Your risk of dying of a disease caused by clogged arteries if you do not consume saturated fat and cholesterol: five per cent.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a group of 4000 of the top doctors in America recently put out their own Four Basic Foods chart, much to the chagrin of that powerful lobby, the meat and diary industry. The ‘basic’ foods are: whole grains; vegetables; legumes; and fruits. There is no mention of meat or dairy products as being essential food groups necessary for human nutrition and health. The PCRM’s position is that the less we eat of this stuff the better. Many of these physicians have themselves become vegetarian simply on the strength of the nutritional studies on human beings.

Discover What Makes Water Pure

Posted on March 7th, 2008 in Food And Drink by shopubbblog

Discover “What Makes Water Pure?”

Before anyone can answer that question, “What makes water pure?” he or she needs to learn how the questioner views the concept of water purity. Not everyone has the same expectations from water that is said to be “pure” water. In some situations, such as in a scientific laboratory, pure water should contain no traces of any other chemical.

Of course, most homeowners are not scientists, and most homeowners can afford to form a different answer to the question “What makes water pure?” Most homeowners feel confident about offering to those living in a home the sort of water that mimics the water found in a relatively pristine environment.

The water that one finds in the most pristine environment has a recognized mineral content. Some of those who have asked themselves “What makes water pure?” have developed ways to remove any of the dissolved minerals in water. The resulting filtration systems have produced pure water, but for just how long has that water remained pure?

When water looses its natural mineral content, it then gains the ability to interact with a range of organic and inorganic substances. Those who express surprise at the preceding statement have forgotten that water has provided man with a universal solvent. Even water vapor can dissolve particles.

The rain that falls to earth contains particles and minerals from the air. As water washes over the soil, it picks-up more chemical substances. The water that enters our streams and rivers can not be called pure water.

The human body can not suffer ill effects from the minerals in natural water. Today, however, most sources of water contain some harmful chemicals. Those chemicals come from fertilizers and from manufacturing facilities. Sometimes too, homeowners allow harmful chemicals to enter water run-off, and thus to become a dangerous part of the water system.

In addition, most municipalities look to certain chemicals as a way to remove micro-organisms from the water. Those chemicals kill the microbes, but they do not remove them from the water. When city residents drink water from the tap, they drink water that contains both dead microbes and the chemicals that killed them.

Faced with those facts, a homeowner has good reason to ask, “What makes water pure?” Some homeowners might even loose sleep while that question sounds again and again in their minds. Some of the troubled homeowners have thus chosen to act. They have decided to study the available systems for water purification.

Most of the homeowners who search for an effective way to purify a home’s water supply have one primary goal-providing friends and family in the home with clean, pure, great-tasting water. An ever-widening circle of homeowners has chosen to use one particular filtration system.

Every year, one list gets longer and longer. That is the list of homeowners using carbon filters with ion exchange and micron filtration. Why are so many homeowners choosing to use that type of purification system?

Did those homeowners discover a hidden answer to this question: “What makes water pure?” No instead those homeowners have come to a realization. What do they now realize?

Those homeowners have come to realize that they do not want mineral free water. They want water that is free of harmful substances, but water that retains the chemicals from which the body can benefit. After careful study those homeowners have elected to make what they perceive to be the safest choice.

Where did Tea Originate

Posted on March 6th, 2008 in Food And Drink by shopubbblog

Where did Tea Originate?

History of Tea

Tea drinking originates from China several thousand years ago and the story goes that a few leaves of the Camellia plant accidentally fell into some boiling water. The resulting infusion was then drunk by the Chinese Emperor Shen Nung who found it highly palatable, and the concept of tea drinking was born.

Later it was introduced to Japan and then it found its way over to Europe via the Dutch and the Portuguese during the 17th Century. It wasn’t until 1662 when Charles II married Catherine of Braganza, a Portuguese princess with a passion for tea, that tea drinking became fashionable and spread throughout Britain, but as it was so expensive at the time it was only available to the upper classes. Finally in the early 18th Century, the taxes on tea were reduced and tea became accessible to everyone.

Today, tea is arguably the most popular beverage in the world and indeed, Britain is especially renowned for being a nation of tea drinkers.

What is a Tea Urn ?

A tea turn can be described as a metal container which is used to brew tea or to boil large quantities of water for making tea or coffee. The container has a small tap or spigot near the bottom of the container which allows the liquid to pass out of the container and into the cups or tea pots.

Tea urns can be an extremely useful item for village halls, fetes, coffee mornings, catering establishments, work offices, barbecues, rallies, concerts, or basically any type of function, venue or event that requires the provision of refreshments for large numbers of people. A standard tea urn that is capable of holding 20 litres of water can provide tea for up to 120 people in one sitting.

Electric tea urns are more common if a function is to be held indoors but where there is no source of power such as at an outdoor concert or rally, then gas powered tea urns can be used.

Advantages of using a tea urn

- No need to constantly boil and re-boil a kettle
- Can cater for large numbers of people with a minimum of fuss
- No need to serve hundreds of people individually as it allows for self catering if required as people can help themselves
- Cost effective to use
- Saves on energy

Safety considerations

The main safety consideration is the risk of scalding so the position of the tea urn has to be thought out carefully beforehand. Never try to move a tea urn whilst it is filled with water and make sure that the tap is inaccessible to small children. It is also important to ensure that the container is cleaned properly after use in order to prevent any build up of bacteria.

If you are a tea enthusiast or serve tea when catering for events, you could use tea urns as an efficent serving & storage device.
