Car Users Not Protecting Themselves From Whiplash

Whiplash is the most common injury from car accidents and yet is one which many of us are not taking sufficient measures to protect ourselves from. The measures which we can take to protect against whiplash are simple and effective, so there is no excuse for neglecting to take them.

Half of those affected by whiplash never recover from their injuries and many thousands of them could have avoided these debilitating injuries altogether had they followed simple advice.

A properly adjusted headrest in your car is the single most effective tool for preventing whiplash. Despite this, a massive eighty per cent of drivers do not have their headrests correctly adjusted.

And it seems we are no better at protecting our children either. While 97 per cent of parents believe that they are using child restraint systems correctly, 89 per cent of parents are not in actual fact using them properly.

High backed booster seats significantly reduce the risk of whiplash in children and provide enhanced safety levels in general for smaller passengers. Booster seats reduce the risk of injury by 70 per cent. However, only ten per cent of children who should be in a booster seat are in one.

With these simple measures being ignored many millions of drivers and their children are taking unnecessary risks when they venture out. Remember it only takes a low impact accident to cause whiplash.

University Conducts Cutting Edge Whiplash Research

Whiplash is a common injury which unfortunately we still know little about. It is difficult to accurately diagnose and harder still to effectively treat. Some cases heal in a few weeks while others feel the effect for years. And doctors are unable to tell most patients which category they will fall into. They are told ‘only time will tell’

Whiplash is caused by hypertension of the neck, often brought on by car accidents where the neck is suddenly jerked forward and then back in rapid succession. The injury affects the neck and spinal cord, which is what makes it such a complex injury to treat.
Our spinal cord is crucial to our whole bodies, as we all know injuries to the spine or neck can cause permanent paralysis. Dealing with such a vital area of the body, which is in some ways so robust, yet in others so fragile, is what makes whiplash a complex injury.

To make matters worse, often whiplash injuries, while incredibly painful, do not seem to leave any mark, which makes them very hard to diagnose. Doctors usually diagnose whiplash based on the patients explanation of the pain.

The Ipswich Campus Whiplash Research Centre has been conducting studies into whiplash injuries with the help of local sufferers. Their aim is to uncover the ‘bigger picture’ behind whiplash injury.

The emotional and physical well being of sufferers following the accident is a main focus of the study. By tracking the recovery of a number of sufferers, the study hopes to shed some light on the factors influencing recovery and hopefully discover why some sufferers recover so much faster than others.

Chief investigator Dr Michele Sterling tracks the recovery of whiplash sufferers starting almost immediately after their accident. She explained what the study involved:

“The study incorporates some clinical tests performed at the research centre on campus, with innovative monitoring techniques that take the research ‘out of the lab’ and into everyday life,” she said.

“Our research confirms that in some cases, people who suffer neck pain from a motor vehicle accident can go on to experience pain and suffering months and even years after the injury.

“We’re only just beginning to learn what factors determine whether pain and suffering persist, but without knowing more it is difficult to intervene early to prevent long-term problems.”

Volunteers in the study are offered a variety of groudbreaking new treatments at the centre and their reactions recorded and monitored. Each participant is usually tracked for one year, following their recovery and general experiences of whiplash.

Dr Sterling hopes that the research will bring new treatments into use as well as creating a deeper understanding of whiplash injuries. She believes that the study of whiplash can be honed into a more presice branch of medcine which will benefit sufferers worlwide.

“The aim of the research is to determine factors that lead to people experiencing pain and suffering that interferes with their daily life over the long term,” Dr Sterling said.

Personal Injury Lawyer Faces Sack For Assault

Peter Savage, a top Midlands personal injury solicitor may be struck off over a a previous conviction for assaulting a hotel manageress.

Mr Savage was convicted in August 2006 after a night out celebrating a win in court ended with him slapping Amanda Rymond in the face. In court Mr Savage pleaded guilty to the charges but went on to continue practising as a lawyer.

The assualt occurred on the evening of the 21st of April 2006 when Mr Savage, along with a group of friends entrered the Forest Hotel where Ms Rymond was duty manager.

After Mr Savage spilled a drink she asked him to leave. She recalls that “he had been drinking a lot and seemed very drunk to me. He was staggering about, falling into people. It’s a nice hotel and a lot of local people and business people go there for a relaxed drink after work.”

“I spoke to Mr Savage a couple of times during the evening. I’d been told he and some others were celebrating winning a big court case in London.”

“I offered to call him a taxi but he got angry. He raised his voice at some of the other customers and started shouting silly things.”

“I called him a taxi and went outside with him. He was very rude to me. But when the taxi came, just before he got in, he walked back over to me and slapped me hard across the face. It hurt but it was more a shock than anything.”

“I wasn’t expecting him to do something like that and I could hardly believe it. Nothing like that had ever happened to me before and thankfully nothing like it since.”

“He didn’t apologise and went to get into the taxi but myself and another customer managed to stop him and kept him there until the police arrived. He was then arrested and taken away.”

After the incident, Mr Savage pleaded guilty to assault in court, where he was fined £1,500 and ordered to pay £500 compensation and £50 court costs. The judge justified the large fine stating that “solicitors should know better than to behave in such a way”

The incident has now come to the attention of the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and Mr Savage faces a Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal. He could be struck off and banned from practising and faces fines of up to £5000.

The SRA said that “in cases like this where someone has been convicted in court we wouldn’t have to make a case but the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal would decide the punishment.”

Geoffry Negus, a spokesman for the SRA explained why the charges were being looked into by the SRA, saying that “it is important that solicitors’ conduct outside the workplace does not bring the profession into disrepute.”

While the SRA do take violent offences very seriously, it is possible that Mr Savage will escape being struck off as he has no previous blots on his record. He is also a member of the Assosiation for Personal Injury Lawyers and is described as a very talented lawyer.

His area os expertise covers serious head and spinal injuries, fatal accidents and injuries to children. Mr Savage offered no comment on his curent situation.
