Finding your Living Room’s Focal Point

People are visual creatures. We are attracted to color and contrasts cause our eyes to take notice. Focal points in a living room serve to draw the eye and hold it, preferably in a positive manner. This article is going to discuss some points on how to create a focal point in a living room that is restful on the eyes and invites examination.

Some living rooms are happily already graced with a feature, such as a fireplace or glass doors, that you can use to build your room around. Others, however, may require a focal point to be created. Often “big” features of a room tend to dominate it and catch the eye - furniture, bookshelves, or tables. If you want a certain “look” for your room, these are the first things you must examine to see if they will provide it. Let’s assume that you have to create your focal point and for an example, let’s say you have a collection of pre-Columbian Mesoamerican crystal skulls that you think would be perfect as a conversation piece - divination, anyone? The first thing is to choose a color scheme. In the case of the crystal skulls, dark, rich colors, like black, blue, dark reds, etc. set them off well. Since painting the entire living room dark blue would make the atmosphere a little too dark (unless you’re going for the Madame Fortuna look), consider painting or buying a shelf in a rich color and use it as the backdrop for your collection. You could even go so far as painting one wall a dark color and painting the other walls a lighter color that really brings out the richness in the color you’ve chosen.

Scatter other items around the room that match the skulls or the backdrop, to emphasize their presence. Decorate starting with the focal point and slowly spread out around the room. Spread out accessories that harmonize with the focal point, to bring the mind and eyes back to it. Crystal candleholders might do well as accents, in this instance. Or other items, in the backdrop color. You can also make your furniture harmonize with the focal point, by choosing and decorating furniture in complimentary or contrasting colors.

Of course, not everyone has crystal skulls as a conversation piece. The application is the same. Think of something that would make a good feature for your living room, then design around it. Take a good look at the piece you have chosen and see how you can replicate it around the room, so that you can draw the mind back to your focal point and bring the room together.

The one thing that a webmaster cannot live without is traffic. It is the holy grail of all web mastery, and is constantly sought by all web site owners from Google to the smallest startup. The one thing we know for sure is that if you want to make money online, you need traffic to your website. In this article, I explain how Article Marketing can do just that.

You may have the best product on the web, and you may be able to convert 90% of your visitors to a sale. But, for conversion to matter, you need traffic. Having a website with a SEO optimized design coupled with fantastic content centered around keyword-optimized tags is the first step. There are two parts to SEO — content relevance to keywords (thing one) and authority (thing two). It is “thing two,” largely measured by the strength of backlinks, that determines how you rank against your competition.

For the record, it is important to clear one thing up — Article Marketing is often confused with “bum marketing,” but they are not really the same thing. Bum Marketing (not covered here) is a marketing strategy that sometimes uses Article Marketing to convert traffic to sales. Article Marketing is a technique for driving traffic and creating page authority. In this article, some key ideas behind article marketing are explained.

As mentioned before, article marketing refers to a traffic generation method. This method depends on submitting informative “articles” to sites called “article directories.” These articles generally consist of an article body that has generally useful information, and an article resource box that contains links back to the author’s site. This is the technique that is sometimes mistakenly called “Bum Marketing” (so named since it is so easy even a bum could do it.) Good article directories have great traffic and strong Google page rank, so publishing your information there increases the chance that people will see and read what you have to say. Additionally, article directories allow people to copy and republish their articles, provided the article is unchanged and the resource box is preserved. This means that your article with your links could end up on multiple sites with lots of exposure. That means lots of backlinks and click-throughs to you. If you can convert that traffic, you can make money.

There are literally hundreds of article directories. The fact that there are hundreds of article directories opens up the interesting possibility of submitting your articles to many directories and multiplying your exposure. (There can be downsides to this, however, as will be discussed below).
The strength of article marketing is the promise of two complementary sources of traffic.

This is a key idea that is often not understood. When you initially submit your articles, if they are well written, you should expect that they will be spread wide and read often. If you write an effective resource box (the box at the bottom of the article), those same readers will want more information and click the links in the box – landing on your site. Instant traffic.

This simple idea generates immediate traffic to your site. Once your article has spread around the net with links to your site at the bottom, Google will see these links as backlinks to your site. Done properly, these backlinks can help you rank for the pages that the links are pointing to. So, while your direct click-through traffic is falling off, your organic search engine traffic will increase.

Earlier, it was mentioned that you could submit the same article to multiple directories. You can, but you need a strategy for that as well to balance the effectiveness of the submission against the impact of duplicate content. Google expects syndicated content to be duplicated, but there are still tradeoffs that need to be considered (beyond the scope of this brief article).

Article marketing is a fantastic way to promote your website, affiliate products or affiliate program. You can use article marketing to take over almost any keyword in Google (given enough time and effort). By writing an article that delivers value and offers a subtle mention of your affiliate product or critical keywords, you’re well on your way to getting the proper exposure for your promotion. As such, Article Marketing is a great way to promote your business online.

- Another general note, is cleanliness. You want your home pretty much sparkling for viewers. So wash those walls, get in behind strange and unknown corners, and find all the gleam under the grime.

- This related to cleaning- but do make sure to de-odorize your home. If there is any hint of mildew, discover the source and eradicate it. Use non-invasive hypoallergenic cleaning products if possible. Spray the home with an organic room spray- something light and fresh and not too pungent.

- Fix small repairs, including squeaky doors, leaky faucets, and loose door handles. These minor repairs add up in the mind of a potential buyer- so attend to the details and you’ll create a glowing bigger picture impression of your home.

Tiles or wood are a good choice for the flooring. But, if you have to work with whatever you have, then make sure it’s clean, and try to tie in the paint color of the walls with the floors. Having nice feature lighting fixture can add a lot to this greeting room as well.

- Moving onto the kitchen. Ah, yes, this is an important re-sale room as you may well know. If your kitchen is drab and obviously outdated this could be a problem. However, there are relatively minor tweaks you can do if this is the case. Have your cupboards re-faced or re-furbished and the hardware replaced with something new and modern. Replace your counter top with granite slab or at the very least a clean, new looking counter top. Replace the kitchen faucet set, paint the walls and see how your kitchen looks now!

- In the bathroom some simple changes can makeover a problem room. A new toilet seat and pedestal sink are easy enough and not too hard on the budget. Again a fresh coat of paint can do wonders. If your tub is really down and out, consider a prefabricated tub and shower surround. Now add some fresh new towels and colorful, modern accents and your bathroom will have great, new appeal.

- If you have carpet throughout the house, consider having it professionally cleaned. You’d be amazed at the difference it can make. In many cases it comes up looking like new!

- Assess the lighting situation throughout your entire home. Buyers area attracted to homes with ample natural light, but you can assist your home by making sure there is enough quality lighting throughout. Again, having some accent fixtures can be a nice touch. Consider one for the dining room.

- Have your furniture and artwork set up mindfully and in way that showcases and highlights the best features of each room. If your furniture is old, or you don’t have any suitable artwork, you might consider renting some- or hiring a professional staging company to help guide you through this process.
